Modern laboratory is not a simple one or two laboratory furniture put together, but a system engineering, a whole laboratory planning space layout, the experimental area must meet certain space standards. The following is a special book "Guide to Laboratory Design and Construction" which refers to the general design and planning standards of laboratories.

1. Indoor Height
The indoor height of conventional laboratories and research rooms should be no less than 2.7 m without air conditioning and no less than 2.40 m with air conditioning. The clearance height of the corridor should not be less than 2.2 meters. The indoor net height of the special laboratory should be determined according to the requirements of the size, installation and maintenance of the experimental instruments and equipment.
The standard cell size of traditional laboratories should be determined by the width, layout and spacing of the test bed. Standard units arranged parallel to the test bench shall not be less than 6.60 M.
The depth of the conventional laboratory unit is determined by the length of the test bed, the arrangement of the ventilation cabinet and the experimental equipment, not less than 6.60 m, and not less than 5.70 m without the ventilation cabinet.
The heating and air conditioning of scientific laboratory building should reduce the area of external windows on the premise of meeting the lighting requirements. Outdoor windows equipped with air conditioning should have good sealing and thermal insulation, and should be equipped with not less than one third of the window area to open the window frame. Disease and pest control measures should be taken for the windows of the first floor, semi-basement and basement.
The width and height of laboratory doors composed of 1/2 standard units shall not be less than 1 meter and 2.1 meter respectively. The width and height of a laboratory door consisting of one or more standard components shall not be less than 1.2 m and 2.1 m, respectively. For rooms with special requirements, the size of doors should be determined according to specific conditions. Laboratory doors should be equipped with observation windows.
6. Equipment spacing

The net distance between the end of the test bed and the corridor wall should not be less than 1.2 m.
7. Layout of test bed
Ordinary test-bed has island or peninsula central test-bed and side test-bed. It is not suitable to place the edge test bench near the wall outside the window. The island or peninsula central test bench should not be arranged parallel to the outer window. When it must be arranged parallel to the outer window, the net distance from the outer wall should not be less than 1.3 M.
8. Layout of Detoxification Cabinet
(1) The recommended space for two detoxification cabinets is 3m, the minimum recommended space for detoxification cabinets and central stations is 1.8m, and the recommended space for detoxification cabinets and walls is 1.8m. Reserve 1 meter non-interference area and 1 meter recommended corridor for detoxification cabinet.
(2) The distance between the detoxification cabinet and the wall is 0.30m. It is suggested that the minimum space of side-to-door of detoxification cabinet should be 1m. The minimum distance of front door of detoxification cabinet is 1.8 M.
If there is no certain space standard in the planning and design of the laboratory, there will be potential safety hazards in the laboratory, with unimaginable consequences. The overall design and planning of laboratories must adhere to the principle of scientific and rational, clear distinction, unimpeded, non-interference, safety and hygiene.
